Columbian Mammoth

Mammuthus columbi

This grassland and woodland inhabitant was probably the largest animal of Pleistocene Kentucky.  Large males were tall – 3.7–4.0 m (12–13 ft) – and weighed between 7–9 metric tons. Their spiraled tusks grew up to 4.25 metres (13.9 ft) long.  The mammoth as well as the mastodon went extinct as recently as 10-12,000 years ago, probably due to human hunting as well as environmental factors.
